There’s a New Chief in Town
Long-time Bolivar Police Officer Michael Jones has been selected to fill the position of Chief of Police for the City of Bolivar. Chief Jones officially assumed the leadership post at the Bolivar Police Department on January 1, after being appointed by Mayor Julian McTizic.
Chief Jones is no stranger to the police department or to the citizens of Bolivar. He has been an active member of the Bolivar Police Department for 28 years. Chief Jones has served the citizens of Bolivar in several positions for the department including canine officer, drug investigator, patrolman, sergeant, lieutenant, and has served the last 10 years as a captain. He has worked corroboratively on investigations with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the Drug Task Force, and the Drug Enforcement Agency.
Chief Jones is a second-generation police officer following in the footsteps of his father who retired from the Selmer Police Department. He recalls that working with campus security for a short period while in college revealed to him his calling to serve as a police officer. He applied to become a police officer as soon as he turned 21 years of age. Chief Jones is married with five children and five grandchildren.
“Chief Jones brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience to lead this department and has proven himself to be an exceptional leader,” said Mayor McTizic. “I expect that his familiarity with the department’s operating procedures and personnel will result in an efficient and flawless transition for the department.”
Chief Jones reported that some of his first goals as Bolivar’s new Chief of Police will be to fill the department’s vacant positions, assist neighborhoods in starting neighborhood watch programs, implementing crime prevention education programs, and becoming more proactive with the public.
Jones replaces Pat Baker, who served as Bolivar Police Chief since 2011. Baker resigned November 28. Assistant Chief David Sipes served as interim until Jones was named.
The public is cordially invited to meet Chief Jones and attend the Oath of Office and Promotion Ceremony on Thursday, January 17, 2019, at 6:00 p.m. at the Bolivar Municipal Center, which will be followed by the State of the City Address by Mayor Julian McTizic.
