Miller Wins Council Seat

Former Bolivar Mayoral candidate Caroline Miller defeated incumbent Carole Spinks to win the District A, Position 1 spot on the Bolivar City Council.

“I have to thank God, my husband Dominick for always believing in and investing in me and especially to Brenda Woods for convincing me to run, encouraging me, getting folks to the polls and literally being the wind beneath my wings! I want the people of Bolivar to know that I care about what happens to all of us. I will always keep making a Better Bolivar... for Everybody at the top of my mind. I look forward to working with the mayor and council to do just that. My mother, Councilwoman Lois Bernice Miller, would be so proud,” she said.

Miller’s margin of victory was 109-65 in an election that only had 426 voters go to the polls in two different districts.

In the other race in District A, incumbent Larry McKinnie defeated Donell Polk 149-25. District B only had one competitive race, as Todd Lowe beat Gwenda Woods 194-48. The other race saw newcomer to the council Chris Williams get 208 votes in a non-contested race.

“Now that the election is over, I look forward to working with the mayor and other council members on continuing Bolivars’ growth,” said Williams.

“The next 12-18 months will be a crucial time for Bolivar, with the Blue Oval project finishing construction and support services coming to Bolivar and Hardeman County. We have a historic opportunity to see growth like never before, and with that comes jobs, crucial infrastructure improvements, and stability.

Since announcing my candidacy, I have stated that public safety and reducing violent crime in the City of Bolivar would be one of my top concerns, which remains true today. I will support our first responders, police and fire, and ensure they’re adequately funded and have the resources to do their job safely to return home to their families at the end of their shift. We are competing for police officers and firefighters in surrounding counties, so we have to ensure that our salaries and benefits are competitive and realistic. I look forward to supporting and working with Police Chief Jones and Fire Chief Price.

Bolivar currently has several projects ongoing right now, one of which I’m excited and eager to see finished is Sand Beach Lake. The sky is the limit for the potential we have there. With new playground equipment, workout area, volleyball nets, and other amenities being added regularly, this project has already positively impacted our East Side and Bolivar. I look forward to seeing its completion.

I’ve always said that Bolivar’s greatest asset is its people, and I look forward to working with everyone to make it an even better place to work, play and raise a family.”

Election results will be certified May 23 at 3:00 p.m. at the Hardeman County Election Commission.
