Johns honored as 'Lumberman of the Ye'

The Lumbermen’s Club of Memphis was established in 1898. This year they honored J.R. Johns as their Man of the Year. The award, initiated in 1967, is bestowed annually. The club’s web site states the honor is given to an outstanding member “who exudes the longstanding qualities and characteristics of honor, integrity, and involvement in community and industry affairs”.
Born and raised in Cloverport, Johns moved to Middleton in 1976. “I’ve been in the lumber business for 38 years. The last 19 of those with Armstrong Flooring,” he said. “I’ve been a member of the Lumbermen’s Club since 1997.” Johns travels across Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky, and Arkansas as well as Tennessee as he visits mills and makes purchases for Armstrong. Long active in the affairs of the industry, he also belongs to several other allied associations.
Chances are you don’t recognize this organization by name but you certainly are aware of it through its importance to the economy and the education of area children.  In the 1890s, Memphis was known as the “hardwood capital of the world”.
