Weather disrupts middle school tournament

The threat of winter weather on Thursday, Jan. 21, and Friday, Jan. 22 prompted several changes to the opening round of the 2016 Area Six Middle School Basketball Tournament.
One of the teams from outside Hardeman County, Fayette West was unable to attend Thursday’s opening round, prompting several changes to both the boys and girls brackets. In addition, all four games scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 23 were postponed till Monday, Jan. 25.
In spite of the changes the first four games were played on Thursday. In the opening game, the Bolivar boys defeated Toone 40-25. Bolivar’s Jatavius Dotson led all scorers with eight points. Mason Arthur led the effort for Toone with five points. Bolivar will face the winner of the St. Mary’s-Middleton game that was scheduled for Monday, Jan. 25.
In game two, The St. Mary’s Girls defeated Hornsby 56-48. Sydni Aylor led the effort for Hornsby with 13 points. St. Marys will face the winner of Monday’s Fayette-East and Fayette-West game.
In game three, the Toone girls upset Bolivar 31-22. Toone was led by Maddie Piefer and Chloey Daniel with eight points each, while Bolivar was led by Dekiya Jarrett with 15 points. Toone will face the winner of Monday’s Middleton - Whiteville game.
In Thursday’s final game, the Whiteville boys defeated Hornsby 56-48. Whiteville was led by Rayveon Gibbs with 17 points and Tacarion Mitchell with 15 points, while Hornsby’s Kyle Sipes had 18 points. Whiteville will next face the winner of Monday’s Fayette - East and Fayette - West game.
