Middleton Wins Region; Falls in Substate

Middleton’s dominant season came to an unfortunate end March 7, as they dropped a 53-49 home substate game to the Memphis Academy of Health Sciences.

Middleton had advanced to a home substate game with a 55-43 win over Trenton Peabody on March 3, taking the region title for the first time since 2011.

The Tigers led 16-12 after a quarter against MAHS but trailed 26-25 at the half before tying the game at 37 with a quarter to play. The final quarter saw MAHS outscore the Tigers 16-12 to advance to the state tournament for the second year in a row. R.J. Robinson, a Class A Mr. Basketball finalist, scored 16 points in the loss.

Middleton ended the year 25-3, losing only to MHEA at the Brighton Christmas Tournament, to Peabody in District 14A play, and to MAHS.

Middleton’s 25-win season was the most they have had since 2011, when they won 31 games and played in the state title game, losing 84-63 to Lake County. The loss was the first loss in a home substate game since 2006, when they fell 47-46 to Union City.
