Middleton Wins County Championship
Middleton Middle School won their second Hardeman County Middle School Baseball championship in three years on April 8 as they outlasted Bolivar Middle School 3-2 in extra innings.
Middleton’s Blake Massey pitched two scoreless innings in relief for the win after Luke Turner threw five innings, allowing two runs on two hits and striking out nine hitters.
For Bolivar, Tyler Rice went 42/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out three batters before giving way to C.J. Spain.
Middleton, coached by Terry Mills, scored the winning run in the top of the seventh on a Massey single and stolen base. He made his way to third before an Andrew Glissen sacrifice fly scored him.
The championship game was the fourth game of the day. Hornsby, the defending champions, were eliminated from the tournament losing 16-4 to Bolivar and 15-2 to Middleton.
Middleton and Bolivar began the day with a 8-1 victory for Bolivar. A double-elimination format was used until two teams remained. At that point, the two remaining teams played for the title.
A ten-player all-tournament team was selected by the coaches.
