School Board members tour Middleton Elementary

Several members of the Hardeman County School Board were treated to a “home cooked” lunch at Middleton Elementary School on Friday, January 29. “This is something we do every year to show the Board how much we appreciate them,” said Doris Keller, Principal. The meal consisted of soups, sandwiches, and desserts. Each guest was presented with a loaf of homemade bread.
Citizenship was the main requirement for the invitation. Four of them were entrants in the 4-H Public Speaking competition. Following lunch, Board Members Bobby Henderson, Jerry Crisp, Patricia Carter, Beverly Bodiford, and Buddy Nelms were further treated as the students practiced delivering the speeches they had prepared for the contest.
Savana McCullough’s topic was “Entomology” while Emma Robinson’s was “Girl Athletes”. Ella Willis spoke on “Angels Among Us” and Connor Harris’ subject was “Dogs”. Another student, Third Grader, Tucker McMahan, was a lunch guest but was not in the competition which has a minimum fourth grade requirement.
Following lunch and the students’ presentations, Keller led the board members on a tour of the school. Visiting every classroom gave them an opportunity to observe the teacher/pupil interaction. One board member remarked concerning the attentiveness of the students in every class. “I believe it’s because we’ve implemented the Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) program. We strive to teach our students behavioral and social expectations and we’ve created a fun reward system for those adhering to them,” said Keller.
