Hardeman County Youth Commission holds first meeting

The Hardeman County Youth Commission, a group of eight students, four from Bolivar Central High School and four from Middleton High School held their first meeting on Tuesday, January 12 in the Hardeman County Courthouse with Hardeman County Mayor Jimmy Sain presiding, and local attorney Blake Sain, sitting in for Hardeman County Attorney Chip Cary, serving as the youth commission attorney.
The commission was formed by Mayor Sain in an attempt to get youth interested in local government.
During the first meeting, Mayor Sain had Southwest Tennessee Development District (SWTDD) Executive Director Joe Baker and Southwest Human Resource Agency (SWHRA) Executive Director Mike Smith speak to the council to explain what these two organizations do to help both the county as well as individual cities throughout the year.
In their first official action, Mayor Sain challenged the commission to come up with a community project the county could do with approximately $27,000. The money is coming from the sale of a house on Water St. that was given to the County from Wells Fargo. The commission came up with three ideas, an outdoor theater amphitheater, a monument on courthouse square, possibly a water fountain, honoring Vietnam Veterans, or a baseball field for smaller kids. The commission passed a motion 8-0 to do a feasibility study on all three projects before deciding which one to present to the Hardeman County Commission for approval.
