Bolivar Library Kicks-Off Summer Reading Program

Ready, Set, Read! That’s the theme of this summer’s reading program at the Bolivar-Hardeman County Library. The June 3rd kick-off was a success as children and their parents and grandparents gathered around the floor, anxiously excited for the presenter.
With the theme, the focus this summer is on learning about wildlife in the South American rainforest. Speaking of wildlife, the presenter for the kick-off was Bob Tarter of the Natural History Educational Company of the MidSouth. As he told the kids to sit on their bottoms and “crisscross apple sauce” around the mat, he had a few surprises for them. He brought out real-live animals!
The first animal he brought out was a green Iguana named Larry. Tarter told the kids about how Larry is considered a herbivore and can grow between 8-10 feet in length. The second animal Tarter brought was a Red-Tail Boa Constrictor named Scarlet. She had skin that was cold to the touch and an intricate skin pattern that wrapped all around her body. While it’s natural that some kids might be afraid of the snake, some kids embraced Scarlet with open arms and even shoulders. One of the last animals that he brought out was a small, miniature adult deer named Frances. She was as cute as she was well-behaved. The kids were surprised to learn that Frances will one day grow fangs!
