Toone firefighters certified in rescue
Several members of the Toone Volunteer Fire Department have now been certified to perform vehicle extraction rescues, and the Toone department has become an associate member of the Tennessee Association of Rescue Squads (TARS)
According to Jerry Avent, Captain of the Hardeman County Rescue Squad, and one of the five volunteer firefighters trained as a rescuer, Toone is the first of what hopefully will be several departments to receive training in the coming months. The hope is with more firefighters trained as rescuers, it will allow for faster response time in an accident.
“The bottom line is it’s all about saving lives,” Avent said
Avent was one of the instructors during the recent class attended by Toone firefighters. The other four were Andrew Young, John Tillman, Jason Burvee, and Harry Harvey IV. The four men received their certificates during the Tuesday, Feb. 9 Toone Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting.
Avent went on to say Whiteville firefighters will be the next to undergo training, starting on March 2. Several Bolivar firefighters plan on undergoing training in the near future as well. No other departments have expressed interest in the training yet, but Avent hopes to talk to other departments after Whiteville’s training is complete.
