Caris Healthcare honors Bill Stone
Bill Stone, a freelance writer for the Bulletin Times, who is also a volunteer at Caris Health care, and a former Army veteran, was honored by Caris for his service as a veteran during a luncheon on Thursday, November 12.
Stone, who is originally from Birmingham AL., was drafted into the army in 1955, and served on Active Duty in Vicenza, Italy, as a radio operator, then served two years in the reserves, and then two years as inactive reserve, getting discharged in 1961.
“I never saw any combat,” Stone said I was too late for Korea, and got out before Vietnam. My mother actually encouraged me to join, saying it would make a man out of me. When I went down to the draft board, they told me they already had their allotment for the year, but less than a week later, I got my letter saying that I was drafted.”
Stone went on to say that he learned Morse code while in the army, and when he hears it on TV, he can still understand it.
“I really believe that every young person in the United States should have to do two years of some type of governmental service,” Stone said.
