The detached cafeteria building at the old Grand Junction School will soon be the new location for the city’s library. ”We’ve far outgrown our current location,” said Mayor Curtis Lane.

Grand Junction plans future uses for recently acquired school property

“We want to utilize the building in a way that best serves the community and preserves its history,” said Mayor Curtis Lane as he spoke about the city’s recent purchase of the old Grand Junction School. Plans are already under way to remodel the detached cafeteria building. It will become the city’s library.
“We hope to have it remodeled and ready to move the library this coming spring,” he said.  “We really need the space for the library. We’ve far outgrown our current location.” Lane said.
The oldest part of the building was erected a century ago this year. Grand Junction’s grant writer is already researching federal and state grants possibly available for its preservation. Other grants are available for the library remodel. These applications are being completed.
“The older, main building would make a great community center. The old gym is steel and brick construction and could well become a safe haven for our citizens in the event of a disaster. We will be pursuing available grants as quickly as possible. We’re looking to the future here and we’ll just take things one step at the time,” said Lane.
