Liquor holds up at council
The Bolivar City Council appears to have put to rest the contention and opposition over liquor stores and their locations within the city limits. After the council passed amendments to the original ordinance on September 8, allowing liquor stores within the city, the council followed by providing a conditional permit to Hatchie Spirits to allow them to open their business.
The council was faced with two proposed amendments to the original ordinance. One amendment provided restrictions of liquor stores within 500 feet of a church, school or other related educational facility and the other amendment provides restriction for the church and school zones as well as deleting the requirement the store be within the Devco zone.
“My major point of contention for it being within the Devco area is primarily for the tax dollars we will receive but secondary, which should be primary, is we have less residential areas within the Devco area,” Bolivar Mayor Barrett Stevens said.
