Officers recognized for saving life

Woodrow Wilson, the 28th President of the United States, once said ‘the only use of an obstacle is to be overcome. All that an obstacle does with brave men is, not to frighten them, but to challenge them.” The actions of four Hardeman County law enforcement officers, along with some civilians, exemplified Wilson’s statement in their actions on May 21, when they rescued a woman trapped in her vehicle, submerged under water for over 10 hours off Highway 100 in the Hatchie River waters.
Whiteville Police Captain Ben Davis, Hardeman County Sheriff Deputy Vincent Hunt, Deputy Joseph Brewer and Communications Officer Cheri Baker, were recognized and honored on Thursday, March 26, by Hardeman County Sheriff John Doolen for their actions during the water rescue.
“On March 21, 2015 at approximately 7:43 a.m., a motor vehicle crash was reported. It was later determined that a lady had been trapped inside her vehicle, which was upside down and submerged in water, for many hours. The temperature was in the 40’s on the morning of March 21, which caused the water to be extremely cold,” said Captain Dana Knight. “All four mentioned did not hesitate to wade into the cold water to assist in saving this young lady’s life.
