Saulsbury left without retail

Taylor’s Food Rite closed unexpectedly. “This is the first time in 160 years that Saulsbury has not had a retail establishment,” said Mayor Jim Daniel. The closing will affect the Saulsbury budget through loss of sales tax revenue. This loss equals approximately 20 percent of revenue included in the current year’s budget. Although the city is in excellent condition financially, another source for replacement of the lost income is necessary as soon as possible.
An upcoming meeting of the Joint Economic and Community Development (JECD) organization. This group is composed primarily of mayors of Hardeman County municipalities.
“While it gives the mayors an opportunity to discuss various problems they face, it’s primarily a meeting to talk about ways and means of attracting new businesses to the area,” said Daniel. The next meeting will be October 15 and will be hosted by Saulsbury.
James Pest Control submitted a price for mosquito spraying throughout the city. Bi-weekly spraying during the months of April through September will be performed for $120 each trip. The board passed a motion to accept the proposal, beginning immediately.
