Saulsbury Board finalizes plans for annual Christmas parade

Members of the Saulsbury Board of Aldermen were angered by a report from Jan Ward that someone had stolen the city’s fall decorations from in front of City Hall and the library. The theft, which occurred during daylight hours, included a large basket containing a fall arrangement and even cornstalks approximately seven feet tall. The thieves actually cut wires used to anchor the decorations in place. In addition, fall bows were stolen from the Baptist Church’s sign. The theft was reported to the Sheriff’s office.
The board voted to make an amendment to the city’s budget that would set aside funds for cleaning properties in violation of the new blight ordinance. “We recently passed the ordinance which wasn’t under consideration at the time this year’s budget was approved. We are now beginning to enforce it. We will need funds for cleaning up the properties until collection from the owners is accomplished,” said Mayor Jim Daniel. The board voted to set aside $4,000 for this purpose.
Mayor Daniel wanted to remind citizens a burn ban is in effect. It will be necessary to obtain a permit before burning leaves, limbs, or debris. The fire department has already responded to brush fires which have gotten out of control.
The board set Saturday, November 14 as a work day. Volunteers are needed to help make decorations for mailboxes and to make and hang wreaths. Also help is needed to decorate the Community Center, library, and Sally’s Field.
The city’s annual Christmas parade is set for 5 p.m., Saturday, November 28. There will be no floats this year. Residents of the city and surrounding community are invited to decorate their tractors and riding lawn mowers and join in. Automobiles and four wheelers are not allowed. There are no sign-up forms and no fees. Participants just need to arrive a half hour before parade time. The only requirement will be participants will have to sign a hold harmless form. Every entrant will receive a memento for participating. Beginning at 3:30 p.m., the city will have a bake sale as well as serve hot dogs, and hot chocolate as a fundraiser. Of course, Santa will be there.
