Mayor Sain explains dome of the problems with the landfill to the citizens in attendance at his town hall meeting at the Middleton Community Center on Thursday, August 13.

Mayor Sain deals with drama during town hall meeting

Hardeman County Mayor Jimmy Sain was forced to speak over two upset residents who disrupted his town hall meeting, which was held on Thursday, August 13, at the Middleton Community Center.
The mayor discussed several issues with the mostly attentive crowd, including the budget, the ambulance department, the landfill and the sheriff’s department lawsuit. It was during those last two topics that most of the disruption occurred. One person complained about the landfill, calling Sain a liar on almost every statement that he made. The other person did the same thing when the mayor was talking about the lawsuit.
Most of the crowd appeared interested in what the mayor had to say and posed a few questions for the mayor. One person asked about the new 4-H center at Lone Oaks farm and what kind of impact it would have on the county. Sain said while it would not produce much in the way of tax revenues, and some property tax revenues would be lost, there will be new jobs created, as well as quite a bit of tourism revenue.
“Memphis was only one of several cities that were trying for this but they could not find a suitable site,” Sain said. "We should get a lot of people from not only Memphis but other surrounding areas.”
The mayor went on to say the center is also close to the site of the new lake he is trying to put in. He said it will be a 3500 acre lake, and could attract close to 400,000 people a year, and possibly attract a one million dollar professional bass tournament every year.
This lake would be huge economically for our county,” Sain said.
