Local Church Honors Members Ninety Years and Older

Vernon Spencer recalled the long, three miles he had to walk to get to Antioch Baptist Church when he was just a child. The Hardeman County native has been a member of the historic, Whiteville-based church for more than 80 years.
“Times were different then,” 90-year-old, Spencer said. “We didn’t have cars. We just had our feet and wagons; but we had to go to church.”
Spencer and seven other seniors, ages 90 and older, were honored during Antioch’s first “90 Years Blessed” ceremony, Sunday.
Frances Spencer, Nicy Herron, Dannie Mae Jarrett, Walter Lake, Marie Taylor, Christine Rivers, and Spencer’s wife, Ruby were the others recognized in Sunday’s formal celebration, followed by a fellowship brunch.
