Year in Review – 2015

Another 365 days of Hardeman County events, celebrations, and daily living have come and gone.  We, as citizens, have had many reasons to celebrate as well as mourn.  Here are some of the Hardeman County highlights that made headlines throughout 2015.
The Bulletin-Times named former Hardeman County General Sessions Judge Charles “Chip” Cary Person of the Year.
Middleton Boy Scout Troop 922 announced seven new Eagle Scouts, Caelan McPherson, Matthew Howell, Joshua Vincent, Brennan Gatlin, Jacob Lumpkins, Nicholas Maccarino and Dylan Vaughn.
Holiday charity carried over into the New Year.  The Bolivar Central High School book club made a donation to the Carl Perkins center of more than $1000 worth of books to help serve those already benefitting from the Carl Perkins center’s services and the Bolivar Middle School Clean Club made large donations to refill the shelves of Loaves and Fishes.
BMS band received more than $25,000 in instruments from The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation to benefit the music program.  
The City of Bolivar began talks on restructuring water rates to equalize them.  Hornsby began replacing water meters and Grand Junction Mayor, Curtis Lane signed a mutual aid water agreement with the city of LaGrange.  
Grand Valley Lakes began installation of playground equipment and a new launch pier on the popular lake.
February saw plenty of winter weather around Hardeman County.  
The month sadly began and ended with bomb threats at BCHS forcing them to evacuate for some time on three separate school days.
Bolivar Central High teacher and county commissioner David Young passed away at 31 years old.  He was found in his home when family and friends had not heard from Young and went to check on him.  Students and faculty dedicated the following basketball game to Young and observed a moment of silence for one of their favorite teachers.
The 116th National Field Trials took place at Ames Plantation with a total of 48 dogs entered.  The events of the week included the induction of 11 people and 11 bird dogs to the Field Trial Hall of Fame.  
Bertha Vaughn of “Slim Rhodes Show” and “Midnight Jamboree” fame, joined the Hardeman County Arts Council production of “Set Sail for Disaster”, a Valentine murder mystery dinner theater event.
A rally for Stop the Violence honoring the memory of Clarence Minter, who was shot while sitting in his home, was held in February to raise awareness against gun violence.  This rally was held after two arrests were made in connection with Minter’s death.
Heavy winter weather closed out the second month of the year around Hardeman County.
March
Bolivar Police Department set an example for the community in early March by making a total of 15 arrests in eight shooting investigations marking a backlash by the department after violent gun crimes rose.
