Why You Should Shop Locally
Have you ever heard of the word “leakage?” In the world of economic and community development, leakage refers to monies spent outside of a noted area that could possibly be spent inside it. What does that mean exactly? It means loss of jobs, increased taxes, loss of business, industry and good citizens among many other things. It might make sense at the time to make a run to Jackson, Memphis or maybe even out of state, perhaps Corinth, to purchase something to save a few dollars but in the long run it means great loss for the local economy.
Let me give one example that maybe you haven’t thought of before. Take notice of the license plates you see in Hardeman County. How many say “Hardeman” (and how many that don’t) are purchased by Hardeman County residents? Every local license plate that was purchased outside of Hardeman County was a loss of wheel tax revenue. Basically, wheel tax is money that is earmarked to pay for the upkeep of county roads. So what have you saved? In the long run you are paying more, and the folks that purchased their plates in Hardeman County are paying more as well.
It works the same way in business. When we support our local businesses, we are increasing the tax revenue that is spent on quality of life in Hardeman County, and help provide jobs for our citizens! Make an effort to notice the small businesses here in Hardeman County and the employees they support. Small businesses are vital to every community!
The purpose of the Chamber of Commerce is to continually support business and industry, to help our community grow and develop into the best quality of life possible. We are working with educators to help provide our businesses and industries with skilled workers. We are networking with state and federal agencies so that they are not only aware of our needs, but also of our qualities recognizing the contribution Hardeman Countians make to our great state and country. We are working with businesses and industries to strive for excellence by paying attention to details and having the vision to adapt to an ever changing world. We want to help grow this great community! Let’s all work together and support each other!
