Whiteville Fire Department gets new brush truck

The Whiteville Fire Department (WFD) was recently able to purchase a new brush truck thanks to a $105,000 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG), of which Whiteville was only required to come up with approximately $4,000 in order to receive the grant.
According to Tonya Perry, WFD Secretary, the truck was manufactured by Deep South Trucks out of Seminary MS. and brings the equipment for Whiteville up to five pieces, including the brush truck, two pumpers, one tanker/pumper, and one squad/first response truck.
In addition, the department has received a $6,000 50/50 matching grant from the Tennessee Department of Forestry that will be used for the purchase of equipment. The department has also applied for a loan/grant from the United State Department of Agriculture (USDA) loan/grant which, if successful, will be used for a new building.
“We have just plain run out of room in our present facilities,” Perry said.
Perry went on to say she probably would not know about the USDA grant until January.  She also said if the department succeeded in getting the grant, they are looking at either building on the current site on Hwy 64, or building near city hall.
The WFD currently has 18 volunteers.
