MHS raises money with Donkey Basketball
Middleton High School held a donkey basketball game on Saturday night, September 26, in their gymnasium to raise money for the school’s Community Advisory Board to help fund the annual honors banquet, as well as scholarships.
According to Assistant Principal Keith Cabanaw, a total of 227 advance tickets were sold in addition to the 157 tickets sold at the door for this year’s event. People from all over the community played in this year’s game. The donkeys were provided by Circle A Donkey Ranch in Henry, TN. The ranch, owned by Jim and Brenda Amburgey, has been providing donkeys for these games since the 1970s, and are one of only a handful of companies still doing these fundraisers. Donkey basketball has been around since the 1930s and is still going strong.
“We have over 50 events a year, mostly in the fall and spring,” Brenda Amburgey said. “We currently own more than 50 donkeys, but only ten go out on the road.
She went on to say the donkeys are trained and well taken care of, and seem to enjoy the interaction with people.
