Lone Oaks funding passes
After a lengthy and busy two year venture to gain the University of Tennessee’s (UT) approval and choice as the next premier 4-H camp site in the state, Lone Oaks 4-H Camp and Conference Center has passed the next largest hurdle after gaining UT’s approval…funding.
On April 16, Governor Bill Haslam’s budget passed both the House of Representatives and Senate, which included the necessary funding for Lone Oaks. In spite of objections and unnecessary remarks from legislators outside the county, Lone Oaks gained strong support from State Representative Johnny Shaw, as well as State Representative Leigh Rosser Wilburn and Senator Dolores Gresham, to achieve the passage of the funding.
“I really think that it’s going to mean a lot to the kids and 4-Hers, we already know that,” Shaw said. “It was kind of a no brainer for the state. There’s really no way they could lose in the deal.”
Wilburn said the site is not only: deal because of location, but because of the property itself.
“Lone Oaks Farm is an immaculate piece of property and we are so proud to be calling it home to the new 4-H Camp to service West Tennessee. Although the property is situated in Hardeman County, it is within one hour of Memphis and one hour of Jackson. It will be an easy drive from anywhere in West Tennessee,”
Wilburn said the 4-H program has served needs of children for decades and the addition of the camp will continue to enhance its ability to meet those needs and provide children with experiences they may not have otherwise.
