Liquor sales move one step closer

After passing the largest hurdle in obtaining liquor sales in the city limits of Bolivar, the issue was taken up by the Bolivar City Council on Tuesday, June 9.
“The electorate has overwhelmingly passed a liquor ordinance. It’s our duty to come up with the legalities of how we’re going to regulate this,” Bolivar City Mayor Barrett Stevens told the council.
The ordinance, “Ordinance 15-004: An Ordinance to Amend the Municipal Code of the City of Bolivar and Revise Title 8, Chapter 1, relative to the sale of intoxicating liquor” was passed by the city council with Willie McKinnie abstaining from the vote and ‘yes’ votes coming from James Futrell, Todd Lowe, Julian McTizic, Suzanne Rhea and Larry McKinnie. Tracy Byrum and Randy Hill were absent for the vote.
“This is the first step of it. This is what gets us into the sale of liquor,” Stevens said.
The ordinance sets the rules for how the city will operate the sale of liquor, with key rules including the council must approve all applications, the store must be located within the Devco (Downtown Economic Development) zone, alcoholic beverages shall not be sold for consumption on the premises of the seller, amusement devises such as
