Higgs Competes for Miss Tennessee Title

Laura Ann Higgs, beginning at the age of three, would sit and watch the Miss Tennessee Scholarship Pageant, dreaming someday to become a contestant.  Her dream has come true, as the 21 year old native Hardeman Countian from Toone, Tennessee will be competing in the pageant this week, June 15-18, 2016, at the Carl Perkins Civic Center in Jackson, Tennessee.  Miss Tennessee is a beauty pageant, but is primarily a scholarship pageant that assist swinners in continuing their education.  Miss Tennessee will serve as Governor Bill Haslam’s official spokeswoman for character education and a be a Children’s Miracle Network state ambassador, which is Miss America’s national platform.
Laura Ann chose Team Mica Fund as her platform, stating that she has seen firsthand the devastation that suicide has on a community.  As does Team Mica, she hopes to restore hope to those who suffer from mental illness and raise awareness of suicide through education, as well as release the stigma associated to it.  Team Mica was established after the tragic suicide of Mica Martin Breeden, a 29 year old from Bolivar, Tennessee.
Laura Ann arrived in Jackson on Sunday, where contestants had a meet and greet at the Old Hickory Mall.  Monday and Tuesday will be filled with luncheons, rehearsals, and the interview competition.  The first night of competition was Wednesday, where Laura Ann  participated in the evening gown competition and the on-stage interview.  Thursday night, she will perform a jazz dance to Beautiful People for her talent, and Friday night she will model her swimsuit.  When the field of 36 contestants returns Saturday night, they will be narrowed to a group of 16, one of which is the People’s Choice Online winner.  Votes may be cast at http://wp.misstennessee.org/peopleschioice.  Those 16 contestants throughout the night will be reduced to five finalists each of which will answer an on-stage question, and the long awaited title of Miss Tennessee 2016 will be crowned.  If you are interested in watching the pageant, it will be broadcast live on EPlusTV6, or online at www.eplustv6.com, each night at 8:00.
