Fire Destroys Bolivar Business

Firefighters from the Bolivar Fire Department (BFD), along with firefighters from the Whiteville Fire Department and Hickory Valley Fire Department, battled a fire at the Hardeman County Vision Center on Sunday evening.

The fire was reported to the Hardeman County Emergency Communications District (HCECD) at 1657 hours with approximately 22 people calling in simultaneously.  The HCECD dispatched the Bolivar Fire Department at 1659 hours.  The Bolivar Fire Department arrived on scene with Engine 3 and Ladder 1 at 1701 hours.  Whiteville Fire Department was also dispatched at 1701 hours to assist with the fire.

Firefighters battled the blaze for approximately three (3) hours before bringing it under control.  Departments remained on-scene for overhaul operations and the extinguishment of hot spots until approximately 1730 hours.

“The fire originated in the attic area.  Fires that feed off of oxygen in open attic spaces are difficult to gain control of.  We estimate the building to be a total loss,” said Chief Price.  “Our thoughts and prayers are with Dr. Ligon and her staff as they begin the rebuilding process.

Chief Price went on to add, “I am extremely proud of the partnership that we have with our local county fire departments.  We had an excellent turn-out of firefighters with nineteen (19) responding from the Bolivar Fire Department, six (6) from the Whiteville Fire Department; and two (2) firefighters from the Hickory Valley Fire Department.   In addition, members of the Hardeman County Rescue Squad provided rehab support, Medical Center EMS provided EMS support, and the Bolivar Police Department maintained traffic control.  Fire departments and first responders, in general, rely upon one another during these difficult situations to ensure that everyone goes home safely.  We are extremely thankful for their support on Sunday evening.”
