Distracted driving causes two car accident
Emergency responders were dispatched to a two vehicle accident on Highway 64 at the Lions Club baseball fields after distracted driving sent one driver into the guard rail and became trapped.
According to the police report, Madeline Holbert, 34, of Memphis was traveling East on Market Street (Hwy 64) in a company owned 2013 silver Honda Accord when she told police officers she looked at the GPS system mounted on the windshield and became distracted.
“(Holbert) stated she looked at the GPS system mounted on the windshield and when she looked back up she observed (another vehicle), but was unable to slow in time to avoid striking the vehicle in the rear,” reads the police report.
Lori Nelson, 53, of Bolivar was driving her white Toyota when she was struck from behind by Holbert.
“After (Nelson) was struck, the impact caused the driver to loose control and cross over the west bound lanes of Market Street and strike a guard rail at an angle. The damage wouldn’t allow the doors to be opened so rescue was called to extract the driver from the vehicle,” reads the report.
Holbert’s vehicle stopped approximately 1,000 feet from the point of impact where she struck Nelson. Holbert informed police she was not sure if the brakes had failed or if she had accidentally not pressed the break pedal. She brought the vehicle to a stop using the emergency break. According to the police report, when the tow truck arrived, inspection of the vehicle showed the breaks were working fine.
Nelson was transported to Bolivar General Hospital for minor injuries and was later released.
