Arkansas Travelers visit Bolivar in support of Clinton
“We are strictly volunteers,” said Jim Burkhalter describing the group calling themselves “The Arkansas Travelers”. “That’s right,” added volunteer Marci Riggs. “We take time off from our jobs. We pay our travel expenses. We buy our own food and pay our motel expenses.”
The informal organization began back in 1991 when the group began traveling in support of Bill Clinton’s presidential campaign. It was rekindled in 2008 for Hillary’s first run.
The travelers are back now stronger than ever. Forty-five Clinton supporters travelled from their homes in Arkansas to the Bolivar area on Friday, Feb. 26.
The group met with local volunteers at Joe’s Restaurant and planned their day’s activities. Meryl and Randall Rice of Bolivar helped organize the local effort. Following the kick-off meeting, the group divided into two teams. One team visited the Hardeman County Courthouse.
