County Commissioner Jim Daniel explains to the commissioners and citizens in attendance about the budget, how the county found itself in the financial condition it currently faces, and how the current budget will assist in slowly bringing the county out of a financial crisis.

County budget passes during historic meeting

For the first time since 1827, the Hardeman County Commission held its meeting in the Little Courthouse on Thursday, June 18.  The meeting, which was a public hearing to discuss the county’s proposed budget, enabled the Little Courthouse to remain ‘active’ and become the oldest ‘active’ courthouse in Tennessee, and possibly in the United States.
County Commissioners and residents voiced their opinions and questions about the county’s budget on the same floor where David Crockett once stood and spoke while campaigning for Congress in 1827.
During the budget meetings, satellite rooms were set up in the Little Courthouse and the meeting was live streamed onto screens for everyone to be able to watch and hear the discussions. Those who signed up to speak before the commission were given an opportunity to speak.
Included in the proposed one million dollar budget cuts were cuts to the REDI program, JEDC and the Chamber of Commerce, of which brought the most vocalized objections from citizens.
