Controversy stirs over Bolivar Council meeting

The special called Bolivar City Council meeting is under fire after some councilmen who did not attend the meeting are saying the votes were illegally cast and the meeting was not legal. However, Bolivar Mayor Barrett Stevens and City Attorney Steve Hornsby said the city charter is clear on procedures and the meeting was held according to the charter.
The controversy began almost immediately after the meeting concluded when absent members of the council began stating the vote was illegal due to the low attendance. Four councilmen and Mayor Stevens attended the meeting, leaving four councilmen absent. Those in attendance were James W. Futrell, Todd Lowe, Willie McKinnie, Suzanne Rhea and Mayor Barrett Stevens. Those absent were Tracy Byrum, Randy Hill, Larry McKinnie and Julian McTizic. The date and time of the meeting was determined during the June 9 city council meeting with no members present objecting to the date or time. Councilmen Randy Hill and Tracey Byrum were absent for that meeting.
