BEA Community Calendar for the Week of June 1, 2023

Bolivar Hardeman County Library presents Summer Reading 2023. The event will kick off June 1 at the City Park from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. with registration, games, snacks, and a waterslide. June 16 at 1 p.m. is the Science Guys at the Bolivar Hardeman County Library. June 29 is Community Day from 10:30 a.m.- 11:30 a.m. at the Bolivar Library. July 13 is Chickasaw Zoo from 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at the Bolivar Library. July 27 is the finale with 20 below rolled ice cream from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Bolivar Library.

Hardeman County Arts Council will present The Little Mermaid, Jr at the Hardeman County Arts Center June 2-3 at 7 p.m. and June 4 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $12 and are available online at www.hcagtn.org.

The Annual Youth Football Camp, hosted by Dexter McCluster, is Saturday, June 3, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at 318 W. Main St. Whiteville. The camp is open to girls and boys ages 4-18, and there is no cost to attend. Food will be provided, and the youth will participate in any of the following activities: football, boxing, dance, or cheer. Register online at https://form.jotform.com/231338521800144. There will be a benefit for Polly Morris June 3 from 12:00-9:00 p.m. at Snow White Tavern. Boston Butts will be sold and plates will be sold as well. There will be a raffle and auction. Call 731-659-2665 for more information.

The next Hardeman County School Board Meeting is Thursday, June 8, at 5:30 p.m. 10815 Old Highway 64, Bolivar, TN 38008.

A Reunion of the Classes of Central High School from 1950-1959 will be held on June 10 at Simon’s in Bolivar from 1-4. This is the first time ever for a combined Alumni reunion. Marion Creekmore will be the spokesperson.

Tennessee Reconnect will host Summer Nights With Reconnect for adult learners interested in going back to school at the Bolivar Hardeman County Library on Tuesday, June 13, from 4-6 p.m.

The Hardeman County Commission for Black History (Juneteenth Committee) will host a festival celebrating freedom on Saturday, June 17, from 12 p.m.-5 p.m. at the Sand Beach Lake in Bolivar, 575 Market Street. The entertainment for the event will include music featuring JC, native of Hardeman County, activities for kids, and a talent show. The registration fee is $5, and the deadline to register as well as for vendors and food trucks to sign up is June 12. All citizens are welcome to compete in the talent show, after which three finalists will be selected by a panel of judges. The first place award is $100, the second place award is $50, and the third place award is $25. In addition to the festival, the Juneteenth Committee has proposed a plan to continue building scholarships for youth in Hardeman County; moreover, they are requesting donations towards the Elizabeth W. Lake Scholarship Fund and looking for sponsors who would be willing to help them reach their goal.  Anyone who would like to donate can send their contributions to H.C.C.B.H. The Middleton Civitan Club will host a BBQ Cookoff Saturday, June 24th at Roger’s Kitchen (formerly Southwind Restaurant). For further information, call 731-661-1848 or 731-609-8756.

The Southwest Human Resource Agency will participate in the 2023 Summer Food Service Program. Meals will be provided to all children without charge and are the same for all children regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age, disability and reprisal or retaliation for prior civil rights activity, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service (not all prohibited bases apply to all programs). Meals will be provided on a first come, first serve basis, at the following five sites, Douglas Community, Bolivar/ Hardeman County Boxing Club, Lee-Ola Roberts Library, and Simon Chapel Baptist. To file a program complaint of discrimination, complete the USDA Program Discrimination Complaint Form (AD-3027), found online at http://www.ascr.usda.gov/complaint filing cust.html and at any USA office, or write a letter addressed to USDA and provide in the letter all of the information requested I the form. GED classes are being offered weekly at the Grand Junction Public Library, located at 530 Madison Ave W in Grand Junction. It opens at noon Tuesday-Friday. For more information call 731-764-2716.

Bolivar Masonic Lodge #608 meets the first Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m.

Grand Junction Community Walk every second Saturday of the month at the city park, if it rains it will be at the Old Cotton Gin.

Loaves and Fishes Food Bank needs all non-perishable food items. Call 609-2397 to drop off your donations. Canned fruit and protein items are most needed.
