New law hits uninsured drivers hard

Uninsured drivers beware, driving without insurance is about to cost you big time.
A new law goes into effect on Wednesday, July 1, that will triple fines of people who drive with out insurance, as well as give law enforcement personnel the authority to tow your the authority to tow your car if you are pulled over and do not have insurance. The law, named the James Lee Atwood Jr. Law, was drafted earlier this year after Atwood was killed by an uninsured driver, Roderick Maggett, only hours after Maggett had been cited for driving without proof of insurance, and was allowed to drive off. Seven hours later, Maggett, still without insurance, hit and killed Atwood.
Statistics show that 23 percent of all drivers in Tennessee, or about one in four drivers do not have insurance. In some towns, that figure can balloon up to more than 50 percent. Tennessee is currently sixth in the nation when it comes to uninsured drivers.
