Grand Junction Board plans Holiday activities

Mayor Curtis Lane opened the monthly board meeting asking prayers for the family of Robert Webb, Mayor of Grand Junction from January, 1962 to January, 1972. Webb passed away November 2.
There were several items discussed concerning the holiday season. The Christmas parade was scheduled for Saturday, December 5. There are some changes to the parade’s format. There will be floats in this year’s parade but no cars, trucks, or vans other than those towing the floats and used as transport for the Grand Marshal and Santa Claus.
The city has purchased a new “Tree of Lights” which will be erected in town square. The official tree lighting ceremony will follow the parade and the arrival of Santa.
In addition to a new tree, the city has also purchased 23 new light pole decorations. There has been an ongoing fundraising effort to pay for them. A letter to citizens has resulted in $2,700 in donations so far.
“It’s not too late for citizens to make a donation to the fund,” said Lorie Rice, City Recorder. “We’re really putting forth an effort to make the holiday season a truly festive time in Grand Junction.”
Other efforts to raise money are also underway. Doris Godwin is spearheading a 5-K Walkathon. This event will be held Saturday, November 14 beginning at 7:00 a.m. in front of the John Wilder Community Center. “This is a continuation of fundraising events to pay for the new light pole decorations,” said Godwin. “Afterward there will be a brunch for participants and the first three walkers to finish will receive certificates.” There is a $10.00 registration fee. Those interested in participating should contact Godwin at 731-518-5578.
